RESPONSE 1

The Greeks were very political, they had kings, rulers and social classes. People who conquered lands and wanted to be the most powerful. Like the Greeks in Mesoamerica they also had high leaders and social classes naturally but unlike the Greeks who took over their enemies out of greed these civilizations wanted to sacrifice their enemies to their gods. They were both similar in the fact that they needed to import and export goods to run their civilizations. Both civilizations were polytheists, believed in multiple gods. The difference was that the Mesoamerican’s used sacrifice for their gods. Religious architectures were both built in the names of these civilizations high leaders. Passing their stories and generations through their architecture, written on murals, pottery, clay tablets and gold. The Greeks also did but more on paper they had started literature. The Greeks were very focused on themselves on philosophy and improving mankind. The Mesoamericans were very God oriented, everything in their lives was devoted to pleasing their gods.

Today I feel we as a modern society in Northern America can relate to each culture, many of us like the Mesoamericans grow our own crops and build tombs for our relatives. We are very philosophical and religious, sacrificing for our God. Very militaristic society like the Mesoamericans but I do believe we are more like the Greeks, in our current society. Instead of growing and being dependent on crops we get everything exported. We are power focused human beings who enjoy fine arts and conquering land. We are politically relatable, one power to rule the country and a senate behind them. We have social classes, hierarchy and war. The Mesoamericans were very determined that the planets, stars and the sky were gods, everything they worshipped had something related to celestial events and space. We are more like the Greeks who believed the Gods had human like characteristics.

RESPONSE 2

Even though the Mesoamerican and Peruvian civilizations are geographically on the other side of the world than Greece, they do have significant similarities. They have a very similar political structure. In both cultures there’s a powerful ruler or king and a hierarchical structure is present. Another similarity is the location of the temple. The temple is in the center of the city. While the Mesoamerican Aztec or Mayans used the temple for religious purposes, the Greek temple was used for political, social and religious purposes. The Mayan population lived also in city-states which are comparable with the Greek city-states. The city center included mainly government building. The people of the lower scale of the hierarchical pyramid lived urban.

The fact that both of the civilizations developed one of the first writings, the hieroglyphs, is stunning. The Aztecs, Mayans, and Incas were polytheistic and sacrificed humans and animals to please the gods and ask for better weather. Their gods were often half human-half animal. The Greek gods were believed to reside Mount Olympus and were given human bodies.

Some of the political characteristics still influence our modern society. The first democracy was established in Greece. The religious characteristics did not make it to the modern time anymore. Our society became monotheistic and even more atheistic since we made such a big progress in science.

RESPONSE 3

The Mesoamerican and Greeks had similar forms of government early on as they both Monarchies but they began to differ as they matured. The While the Mesoamericans were ruled by one king the Greeks had their city-states which were individually ruled by their local government.

Socially, both societies were similar. They both had upper class land owner that enjoyed the best of everything. They both had middle/lower class that were the majority and they both had slaves.

Religiously, both societies polytheistic but their gods were entirely different. The Mesoamerican gods were based on things within nature and they prayed/sacrificed to receive favorable treatment/harvest. They Greek gods had human tendencies that the Greeks used to explain the way they acted. They were also supernatural and powerful like Zeus.

Socially, America is very similar to these societies in that we have upper, middle and lower class but thankfully do not have slaves anymore. Religiously, America is for the most part vastly different in that we aren’t polytheistic. Politically, there are still multiple monarchs and a few are city-state type government such as Liechtenstein and Vatican City. Most monarchs today are ceremonial with the biggest and best known being the United Kingdom, a constitutional monarchy, which is ruled by Queen Elizabeth II who rules over 16 countries. Mesoamerica was an absolute monarchy and an example today of an absolute monarchy is Qatar.
