Specific Instructions

This will be the final assignment which consists of five questions (two pages total) to test student knowledge and assimilation of Course Objectives Four and Five.

A) Consider the following scenario when answering the first three questions:

The year is 2016 – the globe has nearly recovered from the recession that many states around the world blame on the US, and in more general terms the Western world. Trade has in large part nearly reached pre-recession levels, and capital investment abroad is brisk. Multi-national corporations have increased in both number and reach, and many new markets are opening (to mixed reviews) in Africa and South Asia.

But while the majority of states have nearly recovered economically, the European Union still labors under the weight of economically weak states like Spain, Portugal and Greece. Germany, which has footed much of the bill for these states, is under tremendous domestic pressure to withdraw from the EU, and England has retreated on almost all fronts. The international press reports that the Union may come apart at any time.

Question One: Many of these multinational corporations in South Asia are requiring much in the way of local resources to produce their products. Yet little if any of the profits from the sale of these products seem to be going into the local economy – they are being re-invested elsewhere, mostly back in their home economies. If you were asked for advice, what would you suggest might be some of the possible outcomes from such arrangements?

Question Two: Most African states, as you know, were divvied up in the great land grab that occurred among the European powers prior to 1900. Almost everyone now has cell phones, and most have access to satellite television and can watch TV shows from around the world. Yet nearly 2/3 of Africa’s people live in desperate poverty, and many rage at the opulence they see depicted on Western TV. Demonstrate how globalization might thus lead to political action in this case.

Question Three: Given the continuing plight of the weaker EU nations, demonstrate a likely possible course of action Germany might take, especially in light of the increasing number of trade pathways open to it in 2016.

B) Consider the following scenario for the remaining two questions:

The year is still 2016, and the Law of the Seas Treaty, which met with heavy opposition in Congress in 2012, has now been ratified by the US. Yet many Republicans and Democrats still see it as not being in the best interest of the United States. You and your friend are having coffee and watching the debate, when she asks you what the big deal is.

Question Four: Demonstrate to your friend (briefly) the possible legal outcomes that could be detrimental to the US now that the treaty has been ratified.

Question Five: While you’re at it, demonstrate to her with the best evidence you have the possible environmental challenges the US is likely to face, now that the ink is dry on the treaty.
