Introduction

James Q. Wilson (as cited by Swanson, Territo, & Taylor, 2017) identified three distinctly different styles of law enforcement, all of which were reflective of the political culture of the communities they served.

  • The watchman style of law enforcement emphasizes order maintenance and is found in economically declining cities with traditional political machines.
  • The legalistic style is found in cities with heterogeneous populations and reform-oriented, professional governments.
  • The service style is found in homogenous suburban communities and is oriented toward the needs of citizens.

Instructions

Based on your reading regarding police administration and politics in policing in this unit, select a law enforcement issue and a law enforcement style. In your paper, answer the following from the perspective of a police administrator:

  • Analyze your selected issue in the context of the law enforcement style chosen.
  • Explore how police communication principles in community relations could be used in managing the issue.
  • Predict how effective human resource management could be used to resolve the issue.
  • Examine the role of appropriate ethical behavior needed to resolve the issue.

Requirements

Your paper should meet the following requirements:

  • Written communication: Must be free of errors that detract from the overall message.
  • Resources and citations: Format according to current APA style and formatting guidelines.
  • Length of paper: 3–4 typed, double-spaced pages, not including the title page or the references page.
  • References: A minimum of three references. (If you create a hypothetical case, references will not be necessary.)
  • Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point.

You are required to submit your paper to Turnitin. Once you review your results and make any needed changes, submit your paper for grading.
