Media Writing on John Oliver Importance of Political Satires Paper
The purpose of this assignment is to practice media writing. You will choose any episode from Last Week Tonight, preferably a topic that resonates with you, and write about the episode. This assignment is an editorial, not an analytical paper. Therefore, your task is to show the worth of John Oliver’s critique. The submission will include a media lead (40-50 words), a full article (500-700 words), and a Facebook post about John Oliver’s episode (25-40 words).
Remember:
- Do not write your name or class-related information on the top of the page. This is an online submission. None of that information is needed.
- Do not analyse any media text used in the classroom. It will reflect poorly on your work ethic, and then your grade.
- Look for ‘John Oliver Example’ under Files for an example on how to write your own editorial.
Format:
- The submission will be written in Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, and double spaced.
- Your media lead may serve as the introduction for the full article.
- Your introduction will include a description of John Oliver’s episode, your opinion on John Oliver’s critique, and the importance of the topic.
- The following paragraph will explain the importance of political satire. Remember, this is an editorial, and, therefore, it should not read as an academic article.
- You will paraphrase from ‘Mocking the News’ to explain the importance of political satire. Cite the author and the article, but not like an academic article.
- Your subsequent paragraphs will then expand on your opinion of the topic by using John Oliver’s critique as the launching pad.
- Restrict yourself to one thought per paragraph.
- Your concluding paragraph will use a quote from John Oliver’s episode, and then finish with your opinion on the topic as well as the quote.
