Introduction

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a serious mental illness that occurs mainly in athletes who play very aggressive sports and can occur when serious and repetitive blows are taken to the head. Symptoms are not the same for everyone who has it but can range from “memory loss, behavioral and personality changes, Parkinsonism, and speech and gait abnormalities” (Kale, 2012). The majority of CTE cases have been found in professional leagues where sports are the most aggressive and competitive. Those who play sports like boxing, hockey, and football are at risk of developing this disease (Kale, 2012; McCrory, Tsharni, and Cameron, 2007; Fainaru-Wada, 2014); especially those in sports where then main objective is to take the other player down.

This disease can have a major impact on those it affects and also those close to people with this mental illness. For example, in League in Denial, Mike Webster was diagnosed with CTE when he passed, but during his last few years he was very paranoid and in constant pain and could not even sleep (Fainaru-Wada, 2014). Though it was Mike suffering from mental and physical damages, his family also had to deal with what was going on with their father/husband and watched him crumble right in front of their eyes (Fainaru-Wada, 2014).

In sociology, people are divided up by certain demographics; age, gender, and social class. In this context we can say that NFL players are their own group and can be studied to compare their health differences to non-NFL players. To begin, NFL players have to be mentally and physically tough to handle the aggressiveness of the sport. This could mean that someone would have to re-learn, or re-socialize, how to interpret certain symptoms, like pain. Also some players might know they have a concussion but choose not to say anything to avoid being sat out (Freshman, 2014). So this could be learned from other players and internalized that maybe the condition isn’t bad as the research shows. If players do get injured and others find out about it, they could be ridiculed for not being tougher and stronger. This relates Parson’s sick role. In addition, stigma can be used to describe the approval or disapproval of others based on someone’s qualities or features (Cockerham, 2012). NFL players might not want to be stigmatized for having a head injury or mental illness in a world that concentrates power, strength, and skills so they might continue to ignore obvious symptoms and continue to play so that they are not shamed by their teammates.

This essay will explain chronic traumatic encephalopathy and its effects on those affiliated from a sociological view of stigma and sick role. Athletes are not the only ones impacted by CTE, their family, friends, peers and general public are affected. In addition, discussion on current controversy and legalize battles within professional sports aimed to protect players and/or the industry will shed light on the power structure of professional sports.
