The narrative/reflective paper allows you to think about and analyze your thoughts and actions with the end goal of improving your professional practice. You are expected to explore and explain events and involves considering your errors and weaknesses as well as your strengths and successes. This form of writing requires you to support your conclusions with outside sources and references. This form of writing challenges you to analyze your feelings/behaviors, consider the experience from all points of view and transfer your learning to your professional practice.
- What is your personal definition of “culture”.
- Description of your own cultural background (i.e. race, culture, gender, religion, language, ability, socioeconomic status, ability, education).
- Identify at least five of your personal beliefs and values and describe a time when you became aware of being different from others.
- Include personal experiences (both positive and negative) regarding bias or discrimination.
- Identify and explain how these values, beliefs, and experiences influence your attitude and affect you in your role as a nurse.
- Discuss why it is important to be cognizant of your own biases and attitudes when providing care.
