Radical Reconstruction

Radical reconstructions referred to the point in American History where the radical republicans where against the equality between blacks and whites. The liberal Republicans wanted the Confederate leaders to be punished for their support in the civil war. The leaders who agitated for the reconstruction included the leaders of Pennsylvania and Massachusetts who opposed the lenient policies of President Johnson Andrew to grant the blacks from the south rights to attain equal rights with the blacks. This was because; the wanted blacks to remain to be the slaves to the white masters and to provide cheap labor for the white masters. The radical reconstruction unfolded at the point when the Americans felt that the federal government had played a role in the state matters affecting the affairs of the state. The radicals wanted to reduce the powers of the President on the state governments and the impact of the federal government on the Southern blacks(“Constitutional Law: Interference with Civil Rights: Power of Congress to Enforce the Fourteenth Amendment”, 2015).

The Congress passed bills which ensured that President Johnson Andrew’s policies did not give powers to the blacks especially on the labor law. Radical Republicans felt that President Johnson Andrew was racist and they overturned Human rights Act Veto which was passed by the president. This Act was replaced with the judiciary as the one to enforce the law. The radical reconstruction did not stop there; the Republicans went ahead to change the constitution to approve the fourteenth amendment which prohibited equality before the law between the blacks and the whites. As if not enough, the Republicans went enough to reduce the congress representation while threatening to reduce the representation of the south if they do not accept black enfranchisement. Ultimately, the amendments let to the introduction of Reconstruction Act in 1867 which gave the Southern Unionists the chance to take the Southern leadership, and there was the creation of five military districts o protect the black citizens and their properties. This caused the amendment f the constitution by the southern states (“Constitutional Law: Interference with Civil Rights: Power of Congress to Enforce the Fourteenth Amendment”, 2015.

The reconstruction process was radical since it involved a lot of political, legislation and economic changes in the America. The Congress was against the lenient policies by President Johnson Andrew and the congress took an action of impeaching the president. The republicans wanted the blacks to continue being the slaves to the whites. There reconstruction process in America around 1960s was radical involving various leaders and political groups.
