Identifying Waste Discussion
Think about the clinical environment where you work or one in which you previously worked. Were there obvious area of waste? Could there be a cost saving intervention somewhere?
This week you will practice the unit manager role. This will be accomplished by exploring an area to reduce waste and implement an intervention to reduce the waste issue. Do not address all waste issues, instead focus in on one area. Please make the waste issue very specific.
There are two parts to this weeks assignmnet. The memo where you notify bedside staff of the issue, the change and the rationale. The second part is the power point presentation that would be presented during a staff meeting. The power point will contain the details of the intervention.
Identify opportunities for waste reduction. Consider the following:
- Setting: administrative, operational, clinical
- Efficiency
- Value to patient
Suggest a specific process change, for example eliminating supply waste, time management etc. The waste issue should be specific and propose a specific plan/intervention to address the waste issue.
There are two artifiacts to be submitted this week, the memo and the powerpoint with cited speakers notes.
Part 1- write out a Memo type communication to your staff. Approach this part as if you are sending out a memo to your staff. When explaining your findings, be sure to have 1 or 2 peer reviewed articles/authors to support the rationale. This helps to make the communication an evidence-based communication and finding.

Part 2- create a 7-12 slide presentation based on your communication above to present to your staff. Be sure to add in cited Speakers Notes and have a reference page. Feel free to be creative.

The powerpoint should have reference slides and contain only the references used within the slides. Please use a total of 4-5 Evidence-based sources to substantiate the changes.

Develop a 7- to 12 slide presentation for your department with cited speakers notes.
