Metaphoric Poetry
Christina Rossetti’s “Goblin Market” is a poem that lends itself to a variety of interpretations. On the literal level it is a narrative about two sisters’ encounter with supernatural goblin men who sell poisoned fruit, but there are many metaphorical and allegorical ways of reading the poem as well. Make a list of at least three different interpretations of the poem, and write a 250-400-word paragraph for each interpretation, providing details about how the elements of the narrative poem work in your various interpretations.
