How one would rank the importance of each of the four principles in the context of bioethics depends on a person’s worldview and what they feel is important to them. The first in line for me would be nonmaleficence which is described as a principle requiring that people not cause harm to others (GCU, 2015). By doing no harm to others shows respect for one another and no harm will be done to patients as a health care provider. Second would be respect for autonomy: again, this shows respect to one another and respects the autonomous decisions a person or patient may make for themselves. Third would be beneficence, preventing harm but providing benefits that are cost effective and produce a positive outcome. As a nurse, this would be in the form of advocating for a patient or family member and working together with the medical team, including the patient. Last would be justice, simply treating patients, family members, and other healthcare team members equally and respectfully. In context to the Christian biblical narrative, I believe they would be in that same order: Nonmaleficence, respect for autonomy, beneficence, and lastly, justice.
