Junctionville Memo

Junctionville was struggling; small factories in this community in the southeast United States were closing as their jobs moved to low-wage Asian countries. Some residents moved away to seek work, which resulted in a 10% population decline and the closing of some local retailers.

Then, several years later, Junctionville was selected as the location of a major automotive assembly plant that was being moved from the high-cost, industrial Midwest to the lower cost, nonunion Southeast. The plant is up and operating, and Junctionville is growing again. New subdivisions and businesses are springing up to support the increasing population.

Recently, Junctionville and two other nearby communities were contacted by representatives for MeggaMart, who want to open a new supercenter store. MeggaMart is a large, global chain that sells groceries and every household, yard, and garage item imaginable at low prices. You are a member of the MeggaMart public relations (PR) staff. You just got off the phone with the director of PR for MeggaMart who told you that Junctionville would hold a public hearing in a month on the request to build the new store, and she would like you to speak for the company at the hearing.

She also told you that while MeggaMart had approached three communities, their preference was Junctionville because of its proximity to the assembly plant and a particularly favorable available site for the store. She also told you there was some opposition because of potential traffic and noise since the proposed site was near a new residential area. Some residents were concerned about who would be attracted to the area late at night since the store would be open 24 hours a day due to shift work at the assembly plant.

Prepare a business memo to the director of PR for approval, and outline the important points you think you should bring up at the hearing. Your memo should be able to answer the questions below.

  • What are the benefits to the community of the store?
  • What is MeggaMart’s response to the concerns of some residents?
  • Should MeggaMart offer any concessions to address residents’ concerns, and, if so, what are they?

They use research and data to justify their use of funds. This week, you will evaluate the 7 S Model for use within planning and executive organizational change. Similarly, you will evaluate a chosen tool or model for effective implementation of a business strategy.

Assignment: Tools for Strategic Implementation

In this Assignment, you will be able to move beyond ideating and assessment to examining the process of strategic implementation in the ever-changing world of business. You will also be able to utilize your experience as a business professional and independent scholar to evaluate the different resources, tools, opportunities, and challenges of implementation. It is not only crucial to determine which tool to use for a particular context or organization, but also how that tool can be most effectively utilized to support the goals of your organization.

To prepare for this Assignment, review the readings on tools for strategic change such as those described in Chapter 12 of Dyer, Godfrey, Jensen, and Bryce (2016) and choose one reading for further examination. Consider how the context of a specific organization (industry, geographical location, status within industry, etc.) can influence both the choice and the implementation of your selected tool, as well as how the application of a tool might vary among different business leaders and practitioners. Be sure to utilize scholarly, peer-reviewed resources from the Walden Library to identify additional supportive examples of organizations applying the tools and principles of strategic planning and their results.

By Day 7

Submit a 3- to 5-page evaluation of your research on a specific tool for strategic implementation. Your evaluation should include the following:

  • A brief description of your chosen tool, including relevant background, an APA-cited scholarly illustration, and detailed rationale for your choice
  • An assessment of how your chosen tool is affected by different strategic influences (such as environmental factors; internal, organizational considerations; etc.) and whether these changes impact your choice for implementation. Include at least one supportive example.
  • An explanation of the usefulness of your chosen tool to you as a practitioner and independent scholar, including how it will benefit your strategic business leadership. Be sure to provide supportive scholarly examples.

“Schistosomiasis in Lake Victoria: A Community Health Volunteer’s Story” illustrates how economic activities closely linked to local cultures can have a direct impact on disease occurrence. Think of the socio-economic troubles that the people who work in Lake Victoria experience and explain several different ways in which these problems could be addressed.

Schistosomiasis is a water born disease, meaning this disease is transmitted from the larvae that live in the water. The larvae then swim in the pores of the human. This community and its people must work very hard to make a living. Many of the village people hold jobs that require them to be in the water daily. The people know what kind of illnesses and disease the water carries and yet they still take that chance daily. Poverty plays a large role in this, there are not many jobs to be had and the ones that are available run the risk of getting sick. Again, the people must work for a living I found the statement the volunteer said to be interesting, she stated “the disease is what makes them poor” I find this so interesting because I would have never thought about it like that. Although if you ponder that sentence for a minute, the disease causes them to be sick and unable to work which causes no food, no housing, no money by the time they are better they are so far behind that they are always working just to catch up. I can’t imagine that they make much money or have many resources so with the impact of losing what work is available is very detrimental to the survival of the community. Finding different ways to address the problems are going to be difficult. Like I stated above there are not many resources within these poverty-stricken communities. I think the first line of defense is education! I am sure many people know what diseases and illness they can contract from the waters, but there are some who don’t. Closing that education gap informing the community members about the disease, symptoms, when to seek medical help, and prevention. Water proof clothing such as water waiters would be a great resource for those working in the water, the resources are limited but it would be a great way to prevent the larvae from entering the pores of the workers.
